Triptych

By Elizabeth Tidy

About this art

Genre: People
Medium: Painting
Size: 30.00cm x 30.00cm
Year: 2007

The three canvases depict the sitter from different perspectives, and within each canvas two images are overlaid. By using multiple images of different poses and moods this portrait offers a more complete understanding of the individual than is conventionally possible. This idea was taken in part from a triple portrait of Charles the First produced by van Dyke as a study from which Bernini could produce a bust. In this work van Dyke also chose to combine multiple images taken from different viewpoints to give the best representation of the appearance of the sitter. The use of overlapping related images in each canvas breaks down the concrete and tangible nature of oil-paints, and offers a suggestion of the more capricious and elusive nature of an individual, both in appearance and personality.

About the artist

I’ve been painting throughout my life and am currently running it alongside my medical training. Much of my formal work has been produced in oils, but I very much enjoy sketching, and try not to limit my work to conventional outlets (I have recently spent time painting murals of cloudscapes and mountainous scenes.) Whilst I have experimented with many subjects, my real love is painting people. As well as doing some traditional portraiture work, I have also enjoyed using landscapes to reflect the mood of figures. One of my interests is actively using the canvas to confine and frame my subject. Some of my more recent exploratory work has been inspired by a complementary interest in photography, and has focussed on representing moving forms. In particular I have been considering the use of multiple images, and the abstract, elegant shapes thrown when single image captures a moving figure over a period of time. I am currently working in both Oxford and Shropshire, and am taking commissions for oil paintings and drawings of any scale or subject.
